Leicester City have beaten Arsenal to the signing of a top teenage prospect.

Centre-back Joe Jones has decided to join City ahead of the Gunners because he feels he will get more opportunities at the Walkers Stadium.

The 16-year-old, who has been capped at under-15 level for Northern Ireland, has come through the youth ranks at Kingstonian, Wangas in Tolworth and Sutton United, and had been training with Arsenal, but has decided to join City instead.

After initially being told he would not be retained, Jones produced some excellent performances to prompt Arsenal academy head coaches Liam Brady and David Court to have a rethink and offer him a two-year scholarship.

Chortle. Another one for the future.

Hobbs replacement.

Seen him play - he's okay.
Problem is will he be good enough.
How many good players have we produced over the past ten years?
Heskey, Stearman, Mattock and Porter - who has gone today on a free along with others who may come back to haunt us.
The Anderson boy at Liverpool, currently on loan to Forest was released by City Academy as a local youngster - as not good enough !!! and there are many others.

Let's be realistic, if this lad was a great player, he would not be let go by Arsenal.

I'd say you're missing two from that list: Andy King and Matt Piper. Although I still agree that the overwhelming majority of academy players don't seem to make the grade.

I'm not sure its a case of being 'let go' at 16 I'm sure you can choose which club you would like to academy at.

You are right - we like the big, long ball merchants too much at the younger age groups who seldom make it at the highest level of the game. Problem is the Academy structure has not changed in years so it looks like we will keep to the same tried and tested format - try to win the Academy cup at all costs and don't worry about player development........
