Alkmaar - Woensdagmorgen hebben AZ en Leicester City-speler Joey Gudjónsson een gesprek gevoerd over een contract dat de IJslander per 1 juli 2006 aan AZ zou binden. Gudjónsson heeft de club daarop laten weten de aanbieding in beraad te nemen en hier binnenkort op terug te komen.
Directeur technische zaken Marcel Brands toonde begrip voor de situatie: ‘Het lijkt me duidelijk dat wij Joey er graag bij willen hebben voor volgend seizoen maar ik kan me ook wel voorstellen dat hij de situatie liever nog even afwacht. Hij is in de zomer 26 jaar en transfervrij en dat is een zeer gewilde status voor een speler van zijn kaliber. We respecteren zijn voorlopige keuze maar hebben goede hoop dat hij voor AZ zal kiezen’, aldus Brands

As the reports says

He is 26 years old in the Summer and available on a free transfer and that is a very desirable situation for a player of his calibre. (Not literal but into good English). Given that situation any player looking at life in Div. 1 will cast around for other options.

Eredivisie outfit AZ Alkmaar have spoken to Joey Gudjonsson and are hopeful of concluding a deal for the midfielder.

The Leicester favourite has now been offered a deal by AZ and will have until the summer to decide whether to move to Holland on a Bosman.

AZ technical director Marcel Brands has confirmed that an offer has been put forward, with a decision not expected immediately.

“I can imagine that he waits on the situation for a while,'' said Brands.

“In the summer he is 26 years old and available on free transfer and that’s a very good status for a player of his calibre.

''We respect his provisional choice but we have good hope that he will choose for AZ.''

Gudjonsson is also a target for PSV Eindhoven but it is believed he favours a summer switch to AZ.
