I've thought about this, as from the few games I've seen this year Joey is clearly our best player, Hughes is supposedly good (although I havenl;t seen him much), everybody seems to love Williams for a reason that escapes me (yes, he's good for 20 minutes a game, but I don;t see him for the other 70 whenever I've been) and the young untried Wesolowski has been built up as the saviour of LCFC before he's played a senior competitive match.
So on this (albeit convoluted) basis, we have four strong central midfielders, with only two spots for them currently. At the minute we are playing either Sylla, who might be decent in a winning side (trying to find something good to say about him
), but is definitely not the man for a battle, and Smith who is uproven ahead of two of these, or playing one of the four central men wide, out of position.
Add this to the search for a left back, and there is a case for 3-5-2, with Nils, McCarthy and one other at the back.
Hughes looked good against Spurs, supporting MdV well when he was the lone frontman, and having two extra central midfielders will allow him to get forward easier without worrying about leaving a hole behind, same for Joey, and maybe Williams can be the strolling playmaker behind at home, which he seems to want, and bring in somebody else away who will give a bit more bite and better defensive cover alongside Joey who you;d try and get to play more conservative away.
Makes a lot of sense - we still need a wide right player though: maybe Hume out wide? He's certainly go tpace and skill from what I've seen, and this would take the pressure off his questionable career goal return and allow MdV and Fryatt up front: MdV to hold the ball up for Smith/Hume/Hughes bombing forward, and Fryatt to score goals (never seen him play, but at least he has a good goal ratio).
Only problem is we might be a bit exposed out wide at the back...
