Leicester City youngster Lee Cox has this afternoon (Wednesday) put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the club.
The 18-year-old defender has signed a one-year deal after impressing at both youth and reserve team level last season.

Predominantly a right-back, Cox joined the club as a 13-year-old and has progressed through the youth ranks to the fringes of Ian Holloway's squad. He was part of the youth side that won the 2006-07 Academy Premier League title and regularly trains with the first team.

Fellow youngster Scott Garner also signed a one-year-deal with the club earlier in the week.

City Academy manager Jon Rudkin said: "Lee is another player who has worked extremely hard to get to this stage.

"He always gives 100 percent and that has certainly stood him in good stead to date. This is a fantastic opportunity for him to progress further and make an impact at this club."

Thankfully, Melts, there probably won't be much more to get excited about for, oooh, five years perhaps. So your pants are safe...

Signing up the youth team shows the direction we are heading. Not sure how i feel about this - yeah, we have a cracking youth set up (perhaps wasted on a league 1 football club, but still one to be proud of), but it also perhaps the lack of funds made available to put into new signings. To be fair though if I'd spent 20 million quid to go down to league 1 I'd be keeping my wallet shut.

That could be the strategy for staying in Div 1. :icon_conf

TBF, all these couple of lads on professional contracts is the norm at the end of the season. They did it last year with 3 or 4. Now their YTS have ran out, the club can continue on one of those deals and get no dough if someone wanted em or sign em on professional terms and gain a fee. Also on professional contracts, they are allowed to be loaned on a proper basis rather than work experience
