Leicester City U18 2-1 Port Vale U18
Posted on: Mon 03 Nov 2008
Leicester City's academy side progressed into the second round of the FA Youth Cup as they saw off Port Vale 2-1 at the Walkers Stadium on Monday evening.
Goals from Adam Vasey and a Billy Kee penalty helped secure victory for the Foxes and set up a home tie against MK Dons.
City looked for an early advantage as a cross from Luke O'Neill and then a set-piece from Kee called goalkeeper Daniel Lloyd Weston into action in the opening five minutes.
But it was Vale who struck first as City were unable to clear a cross in the 13th minute and Stan Lovett was on hand to fire the ball underneath Robert Ambrusiacs.
Kee saw his long-range effort fly over the bar on 21 minutes after a mazy run from Robbie Burns.
And Kee was in the thick of the action again three minutes later when his defence-splitting pass found Vasey - the midfielder was then able to angle his shot past Weston to draw the Foxes level.
Antony Malbon was unlucky not to restore the visitor's lead as his volley grazed Ambrusiacs' crossbar in the 31st minute before Kee threatened again five minutes before the break with a low shot from twenty yards.
Port Vale began the second half brightly and Aristote Guerin nearly restored their lead after he muscled past Cian Bolger and forced a good save out of Ambrusiacs.
Job Cobb was next to try his luck as he dragged his left-foot shot wide of the post a minute later before Ambrusiacs produced a fine save from Sean Pike's free-kick to keep the scores level.
But City had the opportunity to edge themselves in front from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute - Burns again disrupted the Vale defence and Jamie Ellwell over-committed and brought the midfielder down inside the six-yard box.
Kee stepped up and made no mistake from twelve yards.
Substitute Adi Yussuf almost put the game beyond doubt in the dying moments but his shot rattled the side netting.
Leicester City's academy side return to action on Saturday when Bristol City are the visitors to Belvoir Drive.
