C: (hda) contains WindowsXp and I want to keep the MBR as it is.
D: (hdb) conatins Unbuntu and the Grub bootloader has been installed to D: as well.

When I boot up I can choose to boot from C: or D:

Choosing D: and Grub starts with all usual choices but when I select one of them I get a 'not found' error.

(When I installed PCLinuxOS in the same way things worked fine)

Is there something in Grub that needs editing? How do I do it?

Also, supplementary question for 10 bonus points.......

How do I remove Grub from D: totally? If it was on C: I juts boot into DOS and use fdisk /mbr which works fine. However, this Grub is on D: and even formatting D: won't get rid of Grub.

I know I could physically remove the HD and install it as a C: drive and use fdisk /mbr but that seems like a lot of trouble for what should be easier.

Thanks a lot you wonderful people :icon_bigg

It sounds like GRUB is corrupt. Have a look on the Ubuntu forums for an example GRUB then boot of a CD and you'll be able to edit/replace yours.

Any 'LiveCD' do the trick Macky?

Thanks.

Yeah any live CD should be okay, you just need to be able to browse down onto the HD to the Grub file, it's in the Boot folder I think. You'll be able to open it in any text editor.

Is this a new installation? Has it been working before?

It works fine when I let Grub install on C:

Thing is, I want to preserve the existing MBR on C: because if Grub overwrites it then GoBack won't work. Other distro's I have tried have coped with Grub on D: just fine, it seems to be just Ubuntu that struggles.

Thanks for the link in the other thread too.

You can restore a Windows MBR using a live CD as well, look here.
