West Bromwich Albion midfielder Lee Marshall has been forced to retire from professional football through injury.
The 26-year-old fractured both his tibia and fibula in his right leg whilst playing on loan at Hull City last April.
Marshall had hoped to recover from the injury - that saw him sidelined for 12 months - and despite making a comeback for The Baggies' reserves two months ago the midfielder has decided to call it a day.
"I'm gutted my professional career has come to an end so early and it is going to take me some time to come to terms with it," Marshall told the club's official website.
"But after consulting surgeons and doctors, who have been very helpful, it was the only decision that could be made."
Gary Megson brought the versatile former England Under-21 midfielder to The Hawthorns in 2002.
"I've enjoyed some terrific years in professional football with Norwich, Leicester, Hull and England Under-21s and worked under some great people," added Marshall.
"I would just like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way."
