An update on what Matt Piper is doing now.

Matt Piper hopes to be ready for action when Sunderland return to training in early July.

Piper is yet to take part in a full pre-season campaign with the Black Cats after an injury-ravaged three years at the club.

But the former Leicester City winger has been without pain in his problem knee for a number of months now and the signs look good for next season.

Piper suffered and ankle knock while playing for the Reserves last month but he is just about over that and will follow a fitness programme over the summer to make sure he is in good shape when the squad returns to prepare for the Premiership.

"Touch wood everything will be fine for pre-season," said Piper. "Everyone knows about my problems and I'm looking forward now.

"The knee has been pain-free for a while now and I got a good few games in for the reserves. It's time to look to the first-team picture now."

Piper made just three apearances for Mick McCarthy's side last season after undergoing a knee operation in the U.S. last summer.

He had hoped the surgery by Dr Richard Steadman, a renowed knee specialist in Colorado, would bring to an end his injury problems at the Stadium of Light.

But further setbacks meant Piper was forced to watch as McCarthy's men secured their place in the Premiership.

Dr Richard Steadman sounds like a dodgy character from Quincey

From his own website said:
RICHARD STEADMAN, M.D.

Dr. Steadman, a native of Texas, received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, where he played football for Bear Bryant his freshman and sophomore years. After college, he graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Following internship, two years in the army, and an orthopaedics residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La., Dr. Steadman moved with his family to Lake Tahoe, Ca. where he practiced orthopaedics, with increasing emphasis on the treatment of knee disorders. While living there, he was named Chief Physician for the United States Ski Team. During his time at Lake Tahoe, Dr. Steadman developed special surgical techniques which allowed several ski team members to return to competition and win Olympic medals and championships.

At Lake Tahoe, Dr. Steadman started a non-profit sports medicine foundation in order to conduct research in knee surgery and rehabilitation projects. That organization exists today as the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation in Vail.

In 1990, Dr. Steadman moved to Vail, Co., and was joined in practice there by Dr. Richard Hawkins, a specialist in shoulder disorders. By this time, Dr. Steadman had limited his practice to the surgical and conservative treatment of knee disorders.

Dr. Steadman has developed numerous techniques for knee surgery and rehabilitation that have been adopted worldwide for the treatment of various knee disorders.

"He earned the nickname that would stick with him for life by accepting a challenge to wrestle a bear at a carnival for $1. Although Bryant had his ear bitten, the carnival never paid him."

I want this man at the Walkers next season.
