COTTEE ENDS OLD TRAFFORD JINX

TONY Cottee today (Monday) reflected on finally completing one of his few unfulfilled footballing ambitions.

The former West Ham ace grabbed City's winner in a famous 1-0 victory over Premiership champions Manchester United.

And his first half volley past Peter Schmeichel meant that he had finally broke his Old Trafford goalscoring duck.

Cottee said: "It's always been one of my ambitions to score at Old Trafford but I thought it was one that would never be fulfilled.

"In 15 years with West Ham and Everton I never managed it once although I have had quite a few hooked off the line.

"So to finally score was a fantastic feeling, one made all the more important because it was a winning goal as well.

"It's nice to read all the newspaper headlines on the Sunday and today and it does feel like the years have rolled back a while.

"Moments like those don't happen too often in football and it is important that you savour them."

Cottee was only playing in the absence of leading scorer Ian Marshall.

And the City striker - rescued from Malaysia for £500,000 six months ago - revealed he only knew he was playing an hour before kick off.

"The manager had spoken to me in the week about the fact that I could be playing.

"But it wasn't until the team was read out at 2pm in the dressing room on Saturday and I knew for definite was in.

"Really, it was a fantastic performance by everyone out there.

"I felt we deserved to win on the basis of our first half performance when we created quite a few chances.

"Of course, in the second half we expected to come under the cosh.

"Manchester United put us under a tremendous amount of pressure but we defended superbly."

Cottee was finally brought out of the action wth five minutes remaining with cramp.

But City boss Martin O'Neill paid tribute to the pint-sized striker's performance.

"Tony was magnificent. He took his goal superbly and his all round work was marvellous.

"I told him to last as long as possible and he amazed me by staying on for 85 minutes, given that he is short of first-team match action.

"This was definitely Tony's best game for us in a Leicester shirt."

Thanks for sending me to bed with tears in my eyes :(

I bet the signing of TC would have had a lot of the moaners moaning, had this forum been what it is now, then....

Quite rightly so, Officer Dibble would have been a much better signing imo :icon_wink :icon_razz

I love the fact Marshall was our leading scorer, he could still do a job :icon_lol::icon_lol:

Totally agree.....But unfortunately the deal he offered Melts and I wasn't up to our expectation!
MM will live to regret that decision, I hope for his benefit he can deal with it.

I think some of the "clauses" you insisted on with regards to the activities of the club masseuse and your role within those activities probably contributed to us losing the deal.

I just felt that with more tits, we would be better prepared....

I was looking at the Mercury's Blue Army website and noticed that the news items are archived in order. This is on the first page - it made me smirk several times and laugh out loud once.

Pressman 'just what we want' - Bassett

New signing Kevin Pressman says his move to Leicester City came 'out of the blue'.

The 36-year-old had been considering retirement if he had not found a new club after being released by Sheffield Wednesday, where he had spent 18 years of his professional career.

He told The Sheffield Star: "This is good news, it's come out the blue.

"I've been training with Sheffield United, so I shouldn't be too far behind in terms of fitness."

Pressman's switch to City could pave the way for Welsh international Danny Coyne to finally complete his move to Burnley for £25,000 after just one season at the Walkers Stadium.

Director of football Dave Bassett believes Pressman will provide adequate cover for England international Ian Walker.

As revealed in later editions of yesterday's Mercury, Pressman has agreed a one-year deal and completed his medical yesterday afternoon.

Bassett said: "Kev is an experienced keeper who's seen it all, done it all. He's just what we want.

"I saw him play on quite a few occasions last season and thought he played well, and I've always thought he was a decent keeper."

Meanwhile Norwich manager Nigel Worthington has revealed that City striker James Scowcroft is one of his summer transfer targets.

The Canaries were linked with the 28-year-old on Monday and Worthington has confirmed Norwich's interest.

He said: "Scowcroft is a player we have made an enquiry about.

"He is a very good player and I feel he could add something to our squad.

"But I must stress that it's at a very early stage. There is a lot of work still to be done on that one."

Manager Micky Adams has already dismissed speculation linking Scowcroft, who has scored 23 times in 112 appearances for City, with Crystal Palace this summer.

One striker already settling into a new home after leaving City is Les Ferdinand, who has admitted that he is astonished to be playing in the Barclays Premiership at the age of 37.

The former England striker has signed a 12-month deal with Bolton, 17 years after beginning his league career with QPR.

Ferdinand said: ''Even when I was playing in the top flight and things were going well, I was thinking that if I got to 32-33, I would have had a good innings.

''But here I am 37, going on 38, and still playing in the Premiership. I am going to savour every moment.''

Ferdinand is recovering from a knee operation and hoping to avoid a relegation hat-trick after experiencing the drop with West Ham and Leicester in the last two seasons.

He said: ''I had gone through my career without worrying about relegation. Then it happened twice in two seasons.

''But Bolton have a nice blend of youth and experience and we should be aiming for Europe."

Greece captain Theo Zagorakis has been freed by cash-strapped AEK Athens.

The 32-year-old former City midfielder, player of the tournament in Euro 2004, agreed to end his four-year stay in the Greek capital after accepting a reduced pay-off. AEK are reported to have debts of £65million.
