MMA for anyone who does not know stands for Mixed Martial Arts. It has gained a lot of support at the expense of boxing which (IMO) despite Tyson and Mayweather seems to have been in decline since the 1970s. To my mind the fight game is now more about MMA than boxing. One of my favourite pundits is Joe Rogan. I was amazed to find him doing a clip about Leicester City. In all his videos Joe Rogan uses language that you would not expect from Barry Davies.

You surprise me Sir David. I never thought you would have an interest in such dark pastimes.

No emotion of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran, from the 80s?

On the MMA front, Leicestershire has had a UFC fighter, from my little village near Melton.

I think sport should involve fierce competition. What I detest are sports like synchronized swimming in which people grin. It should also involve trying to make your opponent play badly. There was a saying in the 1960s - "Technique is doing something on the training pitch. Skill is doing it with Norman Hunter's boot up your arse."

You are quite right. I should have included the middle weights of the 1980s. For heavyweights I feel the great era was from Rocky Marciano to Larry Holmes.

In the interview the black chap talks about racist chants and monkey noises. I know this happens in some foreign grounds but I have never heard any racist comment at the King Power.

Why did we sing chants like "Pull that trigger"?

Grinning is just as valid a tactic in sport as trash talking intimidation. Back in the 1970s the Notts cricketer Derek Randall used it against Lilli'an Thomson though it has to be said overall not successfully.

I've listened to Rogan's podcast for years, I usually skip the MMA themed ones but as far as I can tell his interest in football hasn't carried on past what Ian Edwards was telling him in that clip.
