Cheapest will probably be travelling by and splitting tickets at Peterborough and buying the ticket for the second part of your journey off the eastcoast website, about £46, but it mayn depend on the answers to Jeff's questions.

Get a single from Leicester or Nottingham to Newark. £10.20 from Leicester or £5 from Nottingham.

Then you should be able to get an advance single from Newark to Newcastle (leaving at 12:50) for £22.70 if you buy it from the East coast site.

The Newark route I mentioned above involves a walk of around 15 minutes between the two stations in Newark.

If you don't want to do that you could go via Grantham instead. That would be £11.30 from Leicester to Grantham, then £25.35 from Grantham to Newcastle.

This is about £7 cheaper than changing at Peterborough - but make sure you allow time for walking between stations at Newark. The train from Leicester/Nottingham arrives at Newark Castle; the train to Newcastle departs from Newark Northgate. It's just short of a mile; about 15 to 20 minutes if you know which way you're going.
