one of the sports writers in the racing post bruce millington has done a piece on souness about why he is glad he got the newcastle job,basically he said cause he is a motivator and a no-nonsense manager,it went on how he struggled at liverpool because he inherited the oldest liverpool team in there history and was never really given the chance to rip it up and start again.so this got me thinking, what makes micky different from other managers and insist on signing has beens who have no motivation.this is surely his 1 big problem in that signing these players,who dont get me wrong were good in there prime,are players who were well paid in there time, and have enough money to last them a life time.with that all in mind do you really think they care about the plight of leicester city and are bothered about motivation.reverse the situation and sign up and coming players with maybe kids,they would work there bloody socks off and try to earn another contract,need i say anymore about motivation

Exactly, he specialises in signing one season players who know that there is little prospect of them playing again at the top level. For a number of them it is a bonus year and it would take a very special manager to motivate them - probably instilling fear would be the best bet - but they already know they are on their last legs so what have they got to lose.
One could assume that their 'old in sin' attitude rubs off on the other players and this forms one set of the problems confronting the management. We saw some evidence of this problem last season with the friction involving Howey, the departure of Taggart (who had been a decent player), the attitude pre-season of Dabizas and the keenness of decent players to jump ship. This policy of bringing in clutches of has beens has rarely worked anywhere - I suppose Stoke City during the Waddington era of the 60's is an exception - it was of course also tried here by Frank McLintock and we sank without trace.

Surely though all footballers want to win regardless of how much money there being paid and how old they are. Look at Roy Keane he works tirelessly on the pitch and he isnt getting any younger but still he wants to win. I play sport myself and although i dont get paid doing it i still want to win whether its a match or training. I dont think its a case of cant be arsed i just think the confidence is going and quite hard to motivate yourself if you are part of a team who isnt winning.

may have been older,but the likes of taggart and elliott had been at the club a long while,and played as if leicester was in there blood.its a bit different to say signing wilcox on a 1 year contract,who has no affection for us.

With respect, you can't compare our recent signings with Roy Keane except that they all play on grass. Keane may also see himself having a massive future either at Old Trafford or elsewhere as a top coach. As has been pointed out our signings are not exactly steeped in Leicester City and in any case Keane is an exception that proves the rule.

Firstly you cant level all the blame at the so called has beens door its too broad a statement, wouldnt say Keown or Tiatto (both over 30) arent motivated. I understand your sentiments but if you take the Brighton game as an example Tiatto was the only player in my mind who played with any passion.

Secondly although not upcoming young players arent Scowy, Gillespie and Dabizas (all players meant to be around their prime) for differing reasons playing for their futures which should be motivation enough yet on this forum all have had their commitment questioned.

Thirdly buying or playing youngsters doesnt guarentee you passion and commitment, for example look at Jordan Stewart played well for a season, got his decent contract and know quite often looks like he cant be arsed, many younger players become too big for their boots. Also again as stated on this forum any decent young up and coming players we cannot afford them.

MA has tried IMO where possible to strike a balance between youth and experience in his transfers this season, again refer back to previous posts about the quality of the squad.

IMO it is not a lack of motivation or desire from the older players, i think it could be a problem with the current tactics employed.
