There's a new version of the forum software (vBulletin) being developed, with a lot of improvements and new features as well as a new more modern look.
In the past the new releases came as part of the annual $60 licence renewal, but they have decided not to do this for this version, and this means it will cost $190 if I buy it in the next couple of weeks, or $250 if I leave it until later. They have upset a lot of people with this policy (including me), and I'm wondering whether to get it or not.
I haven't got $190 (around £115) to spare at the moment anyway, and if I did I'd probably prefer to spend it on going to a couple of Leicester matches.
So if people are keen on the new features would they be prepared to make a small contribution towards the licence?
Features include:
Photo Albums. Proper ones, not the crap add on we have here now.
Events Management. Don't know what this does.
Blog. Every member can have their own blog.
Article-based CMS Publishing. There would be a new content management system allowing articles to be published that are separate from the forum, threads could be turned into articles and vice versa. It would be a good way to give newsworthy things such as transfers, post match threads etc a more prominent place on the site, and a good way of adding more static content.
Video Embedding (YouTube, Vimeo, Hulu, Dailymotion, Google, Metacafe). This would be integrated into the forum system rather than the current add-on which can be difficult to use.
A new improved WYSIWYG post editor.
Member Profile Pages (updated). This information can be viewed by other members from the member list. Custom user title, URL home page, date of birth, instant messaging medium, location, occupation, biography, interests, vB version, plus any other custom user fields that may be defined by the administrator
Pop-up auto-refreshing buddylist with ICQ-style alerts when Friends come online
Improved private messaging system.
Widgets (like the stuff on the right at the moment, but easier for me to do, and more flexible).
Default widgets include: Recent Forum Posts, Recent Blog Posts, Recent Comments, Recent Articles, Friends Activity,
Section Navigation Widget, Category Navigation Widget, 3rd Party HTML Widgets (eg Google Gadgets), BB Code Widgets, Poll, RSS Widgets.
It's likely to be a couple of months at least before the new version is available, and some of the new features may not be available in the first release - but free upgrades will be available when they are added. There may also be problems getting some of the current add-on such as vBookie and the arcade to work with the new version, although I'm sure they will eventually be updated to work with it.
