New Prediction League season - divisional composition

With Leicester City clearly (ahem!) destined for the Premier League, the Prediction League executive committee decided at its meeting early this morning that there is an urgent need to reduce the numbers of teams in each Prediction League division. This will enable the traditional link between the Prediction League fixtures and the League that City are playing in to continue.

Whilst it would have been preferable to start to make a reduction in the number of teams in all divisions immediately, the executive committee was mindful of promotion promises already made and wary of the problems of making additional, unexpected (and probably unwelcome) relegations. It was resolved therefore to make interim arrangements for the two 2011/2012 Prediction League seasons, with the intention that at the start of the 2012/2013 season no Prediction League division will consist of more than 20 teams. The divisions in the new season will therefore look 'lopsided'.

Six teams will be relegated from the Premier League at the end of the next two Prediction League seasons with just four teams being promoted from the Nporn to replace them on each occasion. The effect of this will be to reduce the Premier League to 20 teams for the beginning of the 2012/2013 season.

Similarly, six teams will be relegated from the Nporn League at the end of the next two Prediction League seasons. Four teams will be promoted from League One at the end of the first of these seasons, but only two teams will be promoted at the end of the following Prediction League season. The effect of this will be to reduce the Nporn Leage to 20 teams for the beginning of the 2012/2013 season.

Based on the number of teams now competing in the Prediction League, there will be 14 teams in League Two in the 2012/2013 season

Fixtures in the new season

Premier League - 24 teams
Each team will play each of the other teams once in a 23-game season, finishing on Boxing Day. The bottom six will be relegated.

Nporn League - 22 teams
Each team will play each of the other teams once in a 21-game season. The top two teams will be promoted automatically. The next eight teams will contest a two-game knock-out play-off to decide the other two teams who will be promoted.

League One - 16 teams
Initially each team will play each of the other teams once in a 15-game season. The top eight teams will then play each other again and will be competing for promotion, with the top two teams at the end of Week 22 being automatically promoted and the next four teams contesting a single-game play-off to decide the other two two teams to be promoted; the bottom eight teams will play each other again and will be battling against relegation, the bottom 4 being relegated at the end of Week 22. (There will be no crossover between the top and bottom half of the table in the latter part of the season)

League Two - 16 teams
Initially each team will play each of the other teams once in a 15-game season. The top eight teams will then play each other again; the bottom eight teams will play each other again. At the end of Week 22 the top two teams will be automatically promoted with the next four teams contesting a single-game play-off to decide the other two two teams to be promoted.
