Newell: No rush over deal
Mike Newell expects to sign a long-term contract with Luton after rejecting the advances of Championship rivals Leicester.
The Hatters boss had two interviews with the Foxes as they sought a replacement for the sacked Craig Levein, but insists he did not contemplate moving.
Newell, whose current contract runs out at the end of next season, has been in talks about a new deal for two months, and chairman Bill Tomlins stressed that discussions had begun long before news of Leicester's interest arose.
"Never at any stage did I consider going to Leicester," Newell said.
"I am an ex-Leicester player, and I spoke to them out of courtesy. It never reached a stage where I was offered a job.
"We have been discussing a three-and-a-half-year extension to my Luton contract since early last December.
"These things take time, but there is no rush. I'm committed, I want to stay and I see no problem in signing the deal."
Since taking over in 2003, Newell led Luton to promotion from League One last term, and has guided them to eighth in the Championship this season.
During the current campaign, the 41-year-old has expressed his frustration that plans to move to a new stadium were put back and at the lack of transfer funds.
But he remains convinced he can lead the club to a higher level.
"I don't think we have gone as far as we can go," he said. "I would like to be part of a move to a new stadium and new training facilities.
"I told the players of my decision to stay on Thursday morning, they were the first to know. I just had a feeling that staying was the right thing to do."
Tomlins added: "Mike has done a great job at Luton and he is a very successful manager with a great team behind him."
