Anybody got any suggestions for a no contract dongle deal? Only need between 1 and 2 GB per month allowance and would rather pay to top up as and when rather than committing to regular usage.

Want to use it in laptop and on a desktop PC when landline broadband is down.

Thanks.

Can't you use your phone for that? :102:

Most phone contracts and PAYG don't allow you to use the phone as a modem.

If you can get hold of a cheap unlocked dongle there are usually some good prepaid sims available on eBay. For example I got an O2 broadband mobile sim with 3GB data valid for 3 months for around £10, and I've had a couple of Three sims for a similar price. Then when it expires just get a new sim from eBay. It works out cheaper than topping up.

This sort of thing Jeff?

Jeff - (or Steven or anyone else!), I've seen mention of 'dashboard' software on the PC that can cause a problem if a different network providers SIM is used with an unlocked dongle.

Is this anything to be concerned about?

Thanks.

The dashboard software that comes with the dongle would usually have just the settings for the network it's locked to.
When I unlocked mine it involved flashing it with new firmware, and that installed a generic dashboard that included settings for other networks, as well as the option to add new ones. If you have an unlocked dongle that installs a dashboard that doesn't allow you to do this you should be able to download the unlocked version from the manufacturer's website.
