This was a good point made by a respondent in Spain

It's not the speed that kills its drivers who take unacceptable risks when overtaking. The UK is slipping down the scale from 1st to 6th because it is still building single carriageway trunk roads rather than dual carriageway as in those countries who have move up the scale.

We are due to have a bypass built here in the next few years to take the north-south A5 traffic out of the town centre. The plan is to build a single carriageway 50 mph road, not because it's all it warrants, not because it will become an accident blackspot, but simply that the authorities reckon that if it's a dual carriageway, it will simply encourage more motorists to use it !!!
