an Holloway had no complaints after seeing his side ousted from the FA Cup at the third round stage by Southampton on Saturday afternoon. But the City boss was remaining upbeat ahead of another full week on the training pitches.
"We were beaten by a better team with better balance today and we can have no excuses," admitted Holloway, who saw first-half goals from Andrew Surman and Gregory Vignal do the damage at St Mary's.
"We had a bit of a game plan but it went horribly wrong. That's life.
"We came a cropper with a couple of mistakes but we must learn and dig deeper.
"We are defending far too deeply at the moment and giving opposing teams far too much space and time to turn.
"I'm just delighted that we didn't lose three points today and we can now look forward to next week."
Holloway has already recruited Steve Howard, Barry Hayles and Laczko Zsolt during the January transfer window and is hopeful of adding 'several' more additions to his squad over the coming week.
He added: "All I seem to have had since I've been here is disappointment but I am an optimist and I am looking forward to working with my team, getting a better shape about us, bringing more new people in, and putting round pegs in round holes.
"Because what we've done so far this season simply hasn't been good enough and that's why I am here - to sort this mess out.
"We are not good enough at the moment, not experienced enough in certain areas and not balanced enough.
"But I am not happy and am not going to put up with this. We will become a high tempo and pressing team."
And despite the side's mixed fortunes on the pitch since he arrived, Holloway remains excited by the challenge.
He said: "This is a hell of a challenge and a hell of a job but I am still excited by it and am determined to give the fans a team they will be proud of.
"I will be judged on who I add and how we get on once the balance of the team is in place.
"I've already brought in Steve Howard and Barry Hayles which isn't a bad start is it?
"This is a big club, just give me a chance and let's see where we are in a few months.
"Once the other pieces of the jigsaw are in place, then hopefully the team will play the way I want them to.
"Some old habits are still there at the moment and it's hard to change but we are working on it."
