I've been having this problem for a while now. Basically what happens is at random times my computer will lock up for about 2 seconds and then just turn itself off.

If I try to turn it back on it will start up for about 3 seconds and then just shut down again. I usually have to wait like 5 minutes before turning it on again.

i think i need to open the CPU and clean the fans out is there any other solutions as it is not a virus?

And there should be an 'On' button on the front as well Spanky.....

Sounds like it might be overheating

any chance of any help?

Your thought that things might be overheating is a good one - and making sure your fans are working efficiently is a good first step to sorting things out.

Google on "CPU temperature" and you wil get more advice than you will ever read on the subject, including ways of finding how hot your system is actually getting.

Also what a lot of people forget is that it's pointless having good working fans if the computer is cased in on all sides by a desk or unit as the air will have nowhere to flow.

Thanks team, i shall look into over heating which might be cause of the fans not working properly, if it is the fan how much is it to replace the fan?

You mightn't need to replace the fan, probably just needs a good clean.
Buy yourself a can of compressed air to do it properly as the fins on a CPU fan can be a bit delicate. Make sure all of the vents in the case are clear as well.

Make sure that there is good contact between the face of the heatsink and the CPU. You can buy heatsink paste (from Maplins I would imagine) or ebay, which improves the thermal conductivity between the CPU and the heatsink. A new fan, if needed, shouldn't cost much more than a tenner (if that).

But he is right it could be the fans, maybe a little of overheating is going on, i would think that it could be a virus though, run NOD32 a few times, then paste the results here and see what shows up bud.

This is the tech forum, lots of people try to offer help & advice.
How is that amusing?

  • Why should he pay out for NOD32? He seems pretty certain that it isn't a virus so I'm assuming he already has anti-virus software installed.
  • Why would he need to run it a few times? Once is enough.
  • Why would he want to paste the results here? What possible benefit would that give?
  • Have you been drinking?

Durrrrrrrrr...

  • He doesnt need to pay out for NOD32, he can get the trial version or download it and grab the serial.
  • How is he 100% certain it doesnt have a virus.
  • Anti Virus programs don't always pick up the virus's first time, sometimes they don't even detect certain virus's.
  • If he pasted the results i could look at them and see what has come up which shouldnt have come up.
  • No I have not been drinking I am giving good advice.

What is your problem?:102::icon_roll
