Peter Shilton Award

It is pleasing to hearof this award for Peter Shilton.

Gordon Banks had left the club before I came to Leicester so I cannot compare them. I will say that with all due respect to greats like Peter Schmeichel and Dino Zoff Shilton was the best goalkeeper I ever saw.

I was a friend of a man called Peter Williams who taught Shilton PE. He told be that he played Shilton in midfield or as a striker despite letters from Leicester City and the FA asking him to play Shilton in goal. Peter was not going to have them tell him what team to pick - "he was so effective on the pitch and I wasn't going to drop the lad in goal to please them."

He also told me that Shilton was the strongest biy he had ever taught and could have become a professional on the pitch as a boxer or a rugby player. Perhaps just as important he remembered Shiltom as a nice lad who never got big headed even when playing for England schoolboys.

I was lucky, I saw them both, and I'm still not sure who was the better goalie, if pushed I would go for Banks, but in reality its to close to call. I remember City going on a pre-season tour of Germany, I can't remember who they were playing but they offered City over a Hundred thousand for Shilton a huge amount of money then for a Goalkeeper, he was only 16 or 17. We still had Banksie then and the fact we went on to sell him because we had Shilton speaks for itself.

Vaguely remember Shilts when he played for Blaby Boys Club. at least the bit where as part of his pre-match warm up (say what?), he sprinted around the outside of the pitch putting the corner flags in place.

Shilts parents used to run a cafe where my dad went regularly in the early 60's. They really wanted tbeir son to make it. Pity his gambling ruined things for him. Still he's a decent guy and down to earth when I met him a few years ago.
More so than Lineker, who I have also met, whom I thought was aloof.

Oh and I might have mentoned before that I stuck a penalty past Shilts no wonder the Germans won the shootout.
