Wednesday raise the steak in Pie War
By David McVay
PIZZA and soup may be the lightweight ammunition favoured by the Premiership prima donnas of Manchester United and Arsenal, but when the good folk of Sheffield go into battle, they prefer the heavy artillery at the front line of attack.
At Hillsborough, something that has been termed a Pie War has been declared on the terraces, although there is no suggestion that this involves men and women in replica blue and white stripes pondering mathematical formulae.
According to Goala!, the official newsletter of the Coca-Cola Football League, the meatier matter for Sheffield Wednesday fans to get their teeth into is the question of whether to choose a filling of steak and kidney or minced steak and onion as they continue on their voyage of gastronomic discovery.
Opinion on the team’s website has brought a division of 50-50 between factions that were counted in their thousands. The club caterers provide minced steak and onion and claim that widening their extensive culinary range, which includes that traditional South Yorkshire dish, chicken balti, would not be cost effective.
To judge from performances on the pitch, there is a suspicion that some of Wednesday’s players have been sneaking the odd pie in preference to pasta, although many thought that Kevin Pressman, their stout former goalkeeper, had eaten most of the pies anyway.
The crusty conundrum may be solved before tomorrow’s home game against Brentford. Shire Foods has organised a mercy convoy of 600 steak and kidney pies that will be given away free before kick-off. The results of a second ballot will be announced next week, with the winning pie making a triumphal appearance for the match with Walsall on Boxing Day.Observers can at least predict with confidence that this is one war that will be over by Christmas. Unless the chicken balti rebels.
Also quite interesting to read Bob Wilsons column in the Times the other day. He used to coach Arsenals keepers and was writing about their current keeper crisis. He said that Stuart Taylor was the best keeper at Arsenal in his opinion but he had a long running disagreement with Arsene Wenger about his abilites. In Wilsons opinion Taylor will never be given a chance at aresenal as Wenger doesnt rate him.
