It's a real shame for the lad, when he burst onto the scene in our infamous relegation season, I really hoped he was going to be the next Heskey, a player who was going to give us 3 or 4 really good season's then move onto a big club for a big fee.

He is then sold to Sunderland for 3.5 million which was incredible money and since then his career has nosedived. I am inclined to agree with you Durham that this could signal the end of a very promising career.

Didn't he take a pay cut just so he could stay at Sunderland this year?

If only Morris would be man enough to do the same.

I seen Piper at Dominoes whilst injured in first year in Sunderland, the general assumption was he was homesick in Sunderland. (I wouldnt be suprised the place doesnt even have a cinema)

Shame that, is that defo Durham?

Matt Piper could need some more surgery, after injuring ankle ligaments in training.

Piper, who made his latest comeback from a knee injury in last month's Carling Cup win over Cheltenham Town, will see a specialist to decide what action is needed after he tore an ankle ligament. Mick McCarthy said: "Pipes has a problem with his ankle. He might need an operation, we're just having a look to see what we have to do with it."

Since we paid Leicester City £3.5m for him in August 2002, Piper has made just 29 appearances for Sunderland, as a series of knee injuries pinned him to the sidelines. An operation earlier this year had looked to have solved the problem, but the new ankle injury has become the latest setback in his trying career.

I cant believe he has made 29 appearances for them, I thought it would haev been less

£3.5m and 29 appearances means they've paid us about £120,690 for each appearance he's made for them!

Such a shame when any players career is ****ed by injury, but especially a player so young with so much potential.

Quite sad. I feel bad for the fella. No one, with the exception of Dennis wise deserves that!

It's been kneeknack previously, as this new injury is to his ankle let's hope it doesn't that's that for his career just yet.

We were lucky in some respects. We got 6.5m for Piper and Rowett that summer. One has been continually fcuked and the other has retired after playing a handful of games since leaving leicester.

But then I suppose we paid the same for Eadie and Jones!!

Swings and roundabouts spring to mind.

Sorry I am just rambling now.
