Come on someone had to say it!

Make sure you have a comfy seat on the way back. Maybe buy a rubber ring for the return journey.

Its not for me, and they are nervous of travelling via london.

Depends what you mean by "best", and what you mean by "avoiding london".

By best do you mean cheapest, fastest, fewest changes, most scenic route?

There are several options involving a change at Birmingham, which could also involve changing at Reading, Oxford, Southampton etc...

But if you don't might traveling through London, just don't want to change trains or use the tube, you could be able to do that by changing at Luton for a train to Gatwick, then getting a Portsmouth train from there.

This would normally be good advice but at the moment the ThamesLink (First Capital Connect) route through London is closed most weekends with people having to make their own way between Kentish Town or St Pancras and London Bridge.

Anu other alternative entails the hour journey from Leicester to Brum and then going down to Reading. It will probably be a couple of hours slower than going via London and may be more expensive.

If the problem with London is anxiety about using the tube, the 59 bus runs from the stop opposite St Pancras station right through to Waterloo station.

National Express do a direct coach, but there's only one a day, the times aren't great, and the journey takes over 6 hours.

Leave Leicester at 14:20, arrive 20:30
Leave Portsmouth at 7:35, arrive 13:50

There are other coaches that involve a change in London - but it's just a change of coaches at Victoria, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

6 hours ffs !!!! Is that via Bradford :102:

I used to catch the 'milk train' to Portsmouth Harbour direct from Leicester! OK that was 25+ years ago. It left very early, was very slow and stopped everywhere.
