I think this is very odd. I see that Sky/BT are arguing that the product is not the one they bought and somehow they have a contract with the Premier League that enables them to say such a thing. They're actually getting more matches than they're contracted to show but for almost half price.

If I were a Premier League side, I'd be furious at this. So furious in fact that I'd hasten efforts to withdraw entirely from Sky/BT and into my own Netflix style product where I can charge less and make more.

It just feels to me like a really stupid thing for the TV companies to do. There has been a lot of talk about the Premier League taking over their own TV packages, and surely this decision is just going to push them towards this?

My line of work exactly. You underestimate how much broadcasters have historically been willing to pay for rights. A league-owned OTT/streaming model is going to take a bit of time. The Subscription revenue just doesn’t match the rights fees. That’s to say nothing of the commercial/advertising revenue challenges that gating your premier content presents....and the costs of building and supporting the platforms themselves.

its probably an inevitability just because it’s the right way to distribute sports, but the traditional broadcasters make a streaming model very cost prohibitive for a league at the moment.

What’s going on here then? Has there been a time slip and we’re in 2007 again?

Am going to wake up in the Walkers Stadium watching an overweight Matty Fryatt chugging around the pitch?

Oh ffs. It's been decent only having 3 posters

saw in the papers this morning that the FA are hoping the FA Cup final on 1st August will be the first to have fans back in the ground, under a reduced capacity
