Recording macros in Excel

Anybody have any ideas why I wouldn't be able to record a macro in XL?

Just get an err message: "Unable to record macro" & that is it, no explanation as to why.
I get the first popup, after clicking on record, to set the macro name etc. but then get the error message every time I try to do anything after that.

it doesn't make any difference what I try to do DV, I can't record any macros at all.

tried all the usual logging out then back in, rebooting etc ?

you have the original disk for Excel?

Yes, yes & yes.
Reinstalling made no difference, can't work out what the f*ck is wrong with it.

Is there a setting somewhere in xl to disable macros?

nope, don't have it.

Just: tools>macro>macros;record new macro;VB editor

VB editor doesn't launch at all. :icon_sad:

Excel 97 on Win 2K
