Foxes Blunt Blades
Posted on: Wed 17 Oct 2007

A youthful Leicester City reserve side gained a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Pontin's League Cup at Worksop Town on Wednesday evening.

City went into the game with a win and a defeat to their name from their two fixtures to date in the competition.

And victory over the Blades has now put the Foxes in a strong position to qualify for the next round.

After a goalless first half, it was the visitors who took the lead through Ashley Chambers at the start of the second period. The nippy England youth international was first to a set piece and did well to tuck the ball past the Blades 'keeper.

The home side equalised in the 70th minute, but the Foxes grabbed all three points with seconds of the contest remaining when Ryan Beswick found the net.

Goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell said: "It was a tight game and neither side gave much in the first half.

We began the match in a 3-5-2 formation but switched to 4-4-2 midway through the opening period. We then moved to 4-3-3 after they equalised in a bid to win the game.

Young Ashley Chambers looked very bright on the evening and he took his goal well.

We brought Ricky Sappleton off on the hour mark because he was feeling his hamstring a bit. Hopefully it won't be anything serious."

City: Pentney, Maybury, Garner, Kenton, Rowe-Turner, Djeziri, Ferreira (Howard 80), McKay, Hayes (Beswick 80), Chambers, Sappleton (Cox 60).

Leicester now face Rotherham United in their fourth and final game of the group stage on November 7 at Hinckley United.
