RESERVES START SEASON IN STYLE

Portsmouth's youthful reserve side took on their Leicester counterparts at West Leigh Park tonight.

Leicester dominated the first 30 minutes, and went 1 - 0 ahead when O'Grady sidefooted home after 40 mins.

Pompey went level when Donaghey's free kick was picked up by Keene. The second half was turned on its head with 2 goals in as many minutes.

Todorov was brought down by Henderson in the leicester goal, and picked himself up to kick home to make it 2-1. Then Horsted made it 3 when he came in from the left and shot under Hendersons body.

Keene scored his second and Pompey's fourth when he bundled home from close range, and 6 wasn't long coming when Fordyce got on the end of Horsted's shot which the keeper failed to hold. Keene celebrated his hat-trick in fine style with a rasping shot from outside the area.

Indeed by the end Pompey could have scored more.

Reserves Fall To Pompey

James GrahamA fledgling Leicester City reserve side went down 6-1 at the hands of Portsmouth at West Leigh Park on Wednesday night.

The Foxes controlled the game for the opening period and duly took the lead through Academy striker James Graham (pictured) in the 36th minute.

But Pompey levelled before the end of the half, and the game would turn on it's head at the start of the second period when the home side added two goals in as many minutes.

Portsmouth would add three further goals before the end of the game, leaving Leicester coach Kenny Black to reflect on what might have been.

He said: "We did well for the opening 43 minutes and could have quite conceivably been three or four goals to the good. But they equalised against the run of play at the end of the half and we collapsed after that. We let ourselves down.

"For as good as we were in the first half we were doubly bad in the second.

"Our goal came from a good move, but it was a long time coming for us as we had had all the play up until that point.

"But after we had dominated we let ourselves down. It was unacceptable."

City: Henderson, Smedley (Norval), Lycett, Sheehan, Franklin, Graham (Chambers), Wright, Porter, Muggleton (Wykes), Dodds, O'Grady.

Keene nets triple as Leicester are outfoxed

By Chris Gibbs at West Leigh Park
Date: 10/8/2005

POMPEY RES 6 LEICESTER 1 ++++ James Keene was the star of the show as Pompey started their season with a thumping win over Leicester at West Leigh Park.

Pompey reserves rattled in five second half goals as they put Leicester to the sword in the first FA Premier League Reserve South game of the season.

After an insipid first half performance, which saw Leicester squander plenty of chances, Pompey were a side transformed after the break.

In the stands were a couple of representatives from Sheffield United, while Fratton old boy Kenny Black turned up on the coaching staff at the Walkers Stadium.

After two minutes Leicester created the first chance, Ricky Muggleton heading over a corner setting up the pattern for the half. Svet Todorov did see one weak early shot saved, but after that Pompey had to be thankful to goalkeeper Andreas Guatelli, who made a string of fine saves.

Veteran Tommy Wright hit a post after eight minutes then Alan Sheenan saw a volley pushed away for a corner after 11. Louis Dodds was denied by a fine last ditch tackle by Gary Silk, then Muggleton shot wide in the 21st minute.

In the 32nd minute Pompey lifted the siege when Keene beat two defenders and passed to Todorov who then fed Daryl Fordyce, but he shot over.

Leicester went deservedly ahead after 36 minutes when Levi Porter fed the troublesome Chris O'Grady whose cross was converted by James Graham from close range.

Pompey levelled against the run of play seven minutes later when Todorov flicked on a free kick and Keene finished from six yards.

Pompey were clearly fired up after the break and at once took the lead as Liam Horstead ran across the area and slipped the ball through to an offside-looking Todorov, who was brought down by the keeper. It seemed a generous award, but Todorov showed no mercy from the spot.

In the 48th minute Pompey stretched their lead when Horstead surged into the box and his cross-cum-shot was helped into his own net by goalkeeper Paul Henderson.

Guatelli injured himself saving Sheenan's shot in the 51st minute but was able to continue after treatment and on the hour Pompey scored again as Horstead combined with Harry Donaghey down the left and his cross was slid home by Keene at the second attempt.

Horstead was having a storming game and he was involved in the fifth goal on 66 minutes as he fought off a challenge in the box before finding Fordyce who forced the ball home. A minute later it was 6-1 as Keene surged into the area and his goal bound shot deflected past the goalkeeper.

Leicester's misery still wasn't over as Ashley Chambers somehow missed from three yards, then a body check on Horstead by Sheenan earned him a second yellow card. As this was going on Guatelli had aggravated his earlier injury in making a save and had to be replaced by Harris.

POMPEY: Guatelli (Harris), Settle, Donaghey, Cousins, Silk, Day (Roberts), Fordyce, Wilson, Todorov (Carter-Harris), Keene, Horstead.

Veteran Tommy Wright

I've lost count of the number of reports I've seen by people who think he's a different Tommy Wright. Usually they think he's the former Irish goalkeeper, rather than 'our' former striker/winger of that name.
Doesn't surprise me that a Pompey fan has got it wrong, it must be difficult to think properly when you have a constant ringing in your ears.
