Difficult to know what of make of this side. :P  ;-)

Our two "season saviours" being given a final run out to get them back to full fitness, before they provide us with the goals/points to stay up

Have faith, dear Steven

Not sure why Gemmill's in there...just let him go, play the youth in the reserves.

I am actually half convinced, afterall, who would have thought Gillespie would be pretty much the first name down in the starting 11 before Levein arrived. CL seems able to draw the best out of players, whatever it is that CL does to players, hopefully it will rub off on Wilcox and Blake.

I know Blake has received a lot of criticism since being at the club. But IMO I think he should be given a chance. De Vries still hasn't scored, and I think giving Blake a chance would make De Vries see that he can't just walk straight into the side and play poor performances. And with Stewart out, Wilcox is the only natural left-sided player we have, so I would give him a chance. IMO he didn't do anything wrong for us before his injury. What do you lot think :?:

The reserves lose 4-3. :? :? :-(

Pompey's young reserve side claim narrow win over Leicester in seven-goal thriller

MATCH REPORT

Pompey reserves 4 Leicester reserves 3

(At West Leigh Park)

By Peter Jeffs

A very youthful Pompey side came up against a Foxes side containing internationals in the form of Nathan Blake of Wales, Tommy Wright of Northern Ireland, Scott Gemmill of Scotland and Jason Wilcox of England.

The Pompey youngsters attacked with pace and movement from the off and were rewarded on ten minutes when Liam Horsted scored from close range after the Leicester keeper had fumbled and the ball had run loose. A minute later young Horsted grabbed a second when, after outstripping the static Foxes defence, he hit a fierce cross-shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area.

It was all Pompey with the visitors being pulverised by the slick passing and interplay on a sticky wet surface. It was three on 14 minutes when the Leicester defence was opened up yet again and after the keeper had partially saved Keene's close range shot it was Shaun Cooper who fired high into the net from twelve yards.

The fourth came on the half hour when another great pass put Angus free on the overlap and his deep cross was headed into the far corner by the onrushing Fordyce.

As the half closed it could so easily have been five when Keene went on a great run and set up Fordyce in front of goal but the youngster's lob drifted wide of the far post from ten yards.

Half time

It was a completely different story in the opening minutes of the second half with Leicester on the offensive and Pompey being regularly pushed back. It was no surprise when, on 47 minutes, after the Blues had failed to clear, the experienced Jason Wilcox hit a low shot into the corner of the net past Guatelli.

Two minutes later the Foxes were awarded a penalty for handball and O'Grady hammered the ball past Guatelli from the spot. On 54 minutes there was another penalty award against Pompey when Silk was adjudged to have brought down Wright but this time Guatelli guessed right and dived low to beat away O'Grady's spot kick.

The action was still fast and furious but this time around it was Pompey who were under the cosh. A minute after Guatelli's penalty save it was 4-3 when the Pompey keeper missed a cross from the right and there was Lycett to head in.

Leicester seemed certain to equalise on 65 minutes when Gemmell was free in the box with only Guatelli to beat but the former Scottish international curled his shot a yard over the bar to give Pompey a real let-off.

But then as Pompey reasserted themselves they had two golden opportunities to make the game safe, after breakaways. First Horsted had the chance to claim a hat-trick when he was right through on goal but with only the keeper to beat he shot wide of the far post. Then in a carbon copy attack it was Keene who was through down the same channel but he too screwed his effort a similar yard wide of the post.

Finally Pompey hung on to claim a magnificent victory that had given tons of entertainment to the hardy few who had turned out in the pouring rain at Havant.

Id just like to congratulate Tommy Wright on his Norn Iron caps.

Lots of people make that mistake, they think he's the former NI goalkeeper of the same name. I've even seen him listed as a goalkeeper in our squad in away programmes.

Reserves Go Down In Thriller

Leicester City's reserve side were defeated 4-3 at the hands of Portsmouth at Havant & Waterlooville FC on Tuesday evening.

The Foxes astonishingly found themselves four goals down with just 16 minutes on the clock.

But despite clawing back three goals in the opening 11 minutes of the second period, City failed to find the equaliser and were left frustrated on the night.

Jason Wilcox began City's comeback a minute into the second period, before Chris O'Grady (pictured) added a second from the penalty spot.

Leicester were awarded a second spot-kick in the 48th minute after Tommy Wright was pulled down in the Portsmouth penalty area, but this time the Portsmouth 'keeper guessed the right way to save O'Grady's effort.

Matt Heath made it 4-3 with a textbook header in the 56th minute of the contest, but for all City's efforts they just couldn't register a leveller.

Coach Peter Houston said: "It was a real game of two halves. Our performance in the first half was a shambles and simply not acceptable.

"But we played a lot better in the second period which was pleasing. We really pushed Pompey back but for all we tried we just could get an equaliser.

"We lost Peter Canero in the warm-up to a hamstring injury and Nathan Blake pulled up in the first half and needed to be replaced.

"Tommy Wright was also injured with 15 minutes of the game to go. Those three players will all be looked at in more detail back at the training ground on Wednesday."

City: Peter Akman, Liam Norvall (Ricky Muggleton), Adam Wykes, Stephen Dawson, Scott Lycett, Matthew Heath, Tommy Wright (Levi Porter), Scot Gemmill, Nathan Blake (Louis Dodds), Chris O'Grady, Jason Wilcox.
Sub not used: Conrad Logan.

Meanwhile, Alan Maybury came through the full 90 minutes of action unscathed as the Republic of Ireland overcame China 1-0 in an international friendly at Lansdowne Road.
