Thunderbolt Saves City On Rainy Night
An Alan Sheehan free kick earned a point for City's reserves on Wednesday night, drawing 2-2 with West Ham in the dying minutes.
Heavy rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of either side in what was a lively contest at the Marston's Stadium, the downpour getting steadily worse as the game progressed.
Leicester dominated possession in the first half, but despite this it was Tony Strokes who had the first scoring chance of the evening, a curling shot from 20 yards which fell just wide. Long range shooting was the order of the day in the early stages with both Ricky Muggleton and Joe Hamill seeing their opportunities from distance fly the wrong side of the post for the Foxes.
On his return from injury Louis Dodds was the first player to test the goalkeeper. Having won a corner, his flicked header from the set piece forced Shaka Hislop to make a diving save to tip the ball over the bar in the 20th minute.
United had the ball in the net a minute later but the Hammers' striker was not only in an offside position but also had to bundle over Logan in the City goal to put it there.
When West Ham attacked on the break, Conrad Logan was up to the challenge, pulling off two fine stops in the first half to keep the scores level at the interval.
Ashley Chambers could have put the home team ahead within seconds of the restart, his first shot parried by substitute goalkeeper Matt Reed before hitting the rebound over the crossbar.
For a split second Sheehan must have thought he had scored when his free kick flew into the top corner, but the referee disallowed the goal in the 49th minute. And the City crowd was again on its feet two minutes later when the ball rattled the underside of the bar but was ruled not to have crossed the line.
Dodds took advantage of a half chance, stretching to poke in a shot with 58 minutes gone, but found the 'keeper in good form to deny him the opener.
That honour went to Chambers in the 63rd minute. The 15-year-old finally made the breakthrough with a rasping shot which nestled in the roof of the net, his second of the season for the reserves having also bagged the first goal against Watford on the same ground earlier this month. However, City's failure to clear a corner five minutes later resulted in Hogan Ephraim being able to level things up at one each.
And the 72nd minute saw the visitors take the lead. Substitute Ishmal Welsh slotting the ball away from eight yards out after Logan was only able to palm the initial effort into his path.
Leicester had to play out the final five minutes of the game with ten men after Liam Norval was dismissed for his reaction to an altercation with Hammers' defender Clive Clarke.
Although a man short, City were back on terms when Sheehan hit a stunning free kick late in the match. This time the official saw no infringement and rightly awarded the Foxes a share of the points.
