Leicester City Football Club are sad to announce that Henry Shipley passed away on Saturday June 20th. Henry was a true fans' favourite and played the post-horn gallop at the Walkers Stadium from 2003.

Leicester City club ambassador, Alan Birchenall, paid tribute to Henry: "It is extremely sad news. He will be remembered fondly by the club and by our supporters and he always received a huge ovation, not just when he was playing but also when he was here as a supporter."

He added: "Henry auditioned for the role of playing the post horn gallop and he immediately stood out, with the full regalia and proper equipment. Sadly, he suffered from ill health in recent years, which is why he didn't play at the stadium, but he still came along to games and his legacy will not be forgotten."

Henry tutored the club's current post-horn gallop performer, Paul Hing, who was equally sad to hear the news, but was keen to remember the contribution that his mentor had made.

"I've always seen him as a family member as he was godparent to my younger sister. Henry tutored me when I was a teenager, roughly thirty years ago and it's such sad news."

He added: "His favourite game was the friendly against Barcelona in 2003 and there is a photo of him at that match in reception at the Walkers Stadium."

The funeral will take place on Thursday July 9th at St. Peter and St. Paul church in Syston, with the time to be confirmed.

"What is the most memorable occasion I can recall", it has to be the time I held up the game at Filbert Street...,Imagine if you will...The band have completed their entertainment, the teams are waiting in the tunnel, the conductor's baton is raised...and I am struggling to free my post horn from the truncheon pocket of my greatcoat. (it was in there to keep it warm), but I had inadvertently placed it in bell-end first and it was refusing to come out. My wife recalls waiting for the down-beat from the conductor, couldn't understand the delay and then noticed all the supporters standing with mouths wide open, roaring with laughter and looking towards me, struggling. But then a camera man put down his camera and saved the day with his penknife - only to curse himself afterwards for missing a good picture. I wonder if there are any supporters out there who remember that little episode back in the 1950s???

Had a brief chat with him towards the end of last season - he was a bit mystified as he felt he was being frozen out by not being invited to play at the Scunny game. Seemed a really nice gent.

RIP Henry.

Sad news. I was a big fan of the live post horn by Henry. It was something relevant and unique to Leicester which set us apart from other clubs playing the standard "let me entertain you" or "carmina burada" as the teams ran in.

I was just thinking how much better this was to hear than Robbie Williams, as played at every other club up and down the country.

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Great piece to sing in a large auditorium. :icon_bigg
