I am a fantasy freak and wondered if anyone had recommendations for me?

read and enjoyed

George RR Martin
Robin Hobbs
Stephen Erikson
Stephen Donaldson
Robert Jordan
Terry Goodkind
Tad Williams
David Eddings
Janny Wurts
JRR Tolkien
David Gemmell
Raymond Feist
Strad Ford
quite a few others

Read and enjoyed not so much
Anne McCaffery
Trudi Canavan
World of Warcraft
forgotten Realms

I can read this type but find them somewhat simplistic. I like good character development and multi-faceted characters.

So does anyone have any suggestions?

I like Humorous fantasy too
Holt
Pratchet (most of the time)
Adams

but don't know so many authors in this genre.

I'm not really sure what you're after since you suggest that you want good character development and multi-faceted characters but like Gemmel, Goodkind and Feist... It's not that they aren't readable but multi-faceted...

Even so, if you haven't alreadt, I'd give Scott Lynch a try.

Can't believe you think Forgotten Realms is simplistic!!

It's books covers centuries of a fantasy world, and most of the books are in trilogies,,some in bigger series than that.

And one of the bestest ever Fantasy characters is from FR, and there is absolutely no way you can say Drizzt Do'Urden is simplistic!!

R.A. Salvatore has wrote numerous fantasy books but Drizzt is by far his best creation.

I guess you won't like Dragonlance either then:icon_roll

Anyhoo!

I've almost finished reading The Banned and the Banished by James Clemens. It's five books and imo a darn good read.

I like Drizzt, I remember playing him in a Baldurs gate game many years ago but the stories are simplistic. That doesn't mean that I don't like them for what they are.

I'll check out scott Lynch and James clemens though - can't say that I've ever heard of them.

I hadn't heard of Clemens, my friends daughters picked up his first book then bought the rest and has lent them to me.

Ohh I've just thought of someone you really should check out: Guy Gavriel Kaye. His books are superb(well I think so!)

The Fionavar Tapestry is a fantastic set(and quite tragic really)
And his stand alone novels Tigana and A Song for Arbonne are well worth reading.

He has several others as well, but those are the main ones I'd recommend.

Yeah I've read Kaye: liked some a lot liked some a little.
