Do any of you lot work in a bank?

If so, or if you know, could you help me answer a question?

A friend of mine is trying to set up their first bank account. They have their passport but no bank is willing to set an account up for them.

They are asking for an official letter with the national insurance number on it.

My friend has gone into the tax office and job centre to ask to be sent a letter with these details on it but both have refused to send anything.

Know that they've got a job, they need somewhere for their pay to go but obviously if banks won't let them set an account up then they are a bit stuck! The Post Office have also been no use as they just said go to the banks.

Any help would be terrific.

When i set up mine, on leaving school i used my national insurance card. If he doesn't have one, perhaps he could ask to be sent one?

I believe if you send him all you personal details he will set up an account in your name. Just look out for the card readers in his banks machines.

So a birth certificate and a passport should be enough?

i had huge difficulty wit hthe same issue, i had a passport, drivers licence but no nat insurance proof. i had to ring the office that dispatched the cards, they sent me a letter with my number on it, that i could use to open a account. my advice, get that lettr, or , if he signed on recently, a letter from the job center, with thew number on it will do.

What's the name of the office that despatches the cards?

Hey, lay off Willllllllllllow, I've helped a lot of people on here so I don't see the problem in asking for help!

What do I do if I have lost my National Insurance number card?Report it to your nearest DWP office, Social Security office in Northern Ireland or HM Revenue & Customs office. If you want a replacement card you will need to complete an application form. Remember that you are only allowed one replacement

if he was born in britain he should have been sent one just before his 16th birthday

If he has a job, then his pay slips / P60 will have his NI number

tell him to get a passbook account for a building society, needs i'd and a utility bill/proof of residence of some sort (easily forged if he needs to). then he can get wages paid straight into it and go and take money when he likes
