Years ago I had Sky TV in another house - the 'box' was not connected to a telephone line.

My partner is just trying to set-up a Sky box at work, but she has been told that the 'box' needs to be connected to a telephone line. If the television signal is arriving by satellite, why is a telephone connection necessary and what is it used for? And can you have Sky without the telephone connection? The telephone line and the Sky 'box' are not in the same part of the building and it won't be an easy job to get the two together.

Can anybody enlighten me here?

You need the phone line connection to enable some of the interactive services such as pay per view etc. - but you don't need it connected to receive the telly

I used Sky for years without connecting to the telephone line (as it wasn't convenient to do so)

I thought that was the case but she is being told (by Sky) that she has to have a telphone connection so that they can enable her viewing card. I am sure that was done 'over the satellite' when I had Sky in the past.

She is unlikely to need PPV or any interactive services.

The above is true, this is process to ensure that you have connected your box to the phoneline as per the contract stipulation. They can work around it and activate over the air but I fear she has already given too much info to sky for them to do this now.

I suggest she calls them back and asks to be activated, when they say they can't do as they cant contact the box via the phone line, you then tell them that they have the road up outside currently and the phones are down.:icon_wink

You have to pay an extra premium if you don't have a telephone line, the new standard Sky contract requires that the digibox is connected to a phoneline at all times.

Complete load of bollocks

Yes. I've just read it.

I think you do for the multi-room boxes to stop people using them at a different address.

The digiboxes also have a phone-home function supposedly to stop the various PPV scams, but how much other data it phones home with I don't know.

i too had some threatening letters if I did not connect.I pay £10 a week extra for multiroom tyhey threatened to up it to £50 a month unless i connected. As yet they have done nothing.

Tell them your dog has chewed through the phone cable and that you'll be happy for them to send out an engineer to replace the cable.
All of the engineers are subbers providing their own materials so they'll be very unlikely to send anybody out due to the cost.

All sorted now. I got a wireless telephone line extender from Maplins, - bit expensive but better than trailing cables all around the building to reach it.

My Sky is not connected to the phone, and i've never heard a peep from them.
If they were to threaten me, i would tell them that i'm cancelling all of their services anyway. They can like it or lump it.

You tell 'em BB, don't take no shit from the man

Which is exactly what I had to do.

This sounds an interesting device, gonna look for it.
