Sluggish Broadband

At home, my broadband has been sluggish.

Now I've checked the connections etc. and everything's fine. Gave my cpu a virus sweep to. But it's still sluggish.

Any suggestions?

If you are on BT? I wonder if theres an issue. Mines been slow for 48 hours and I know of 2 other BT connections suffering the same.

Do you use the BT modem or your own? I had a router that never worked properly again after a thunderstorm, had to bin it and buy a new one in the end.

BT modem....the thing is the connection to the Playstation works fine.

Seems to be a common theme though. I did a few searches and couldn't find anything though.

What are you trying to view? I think BT enforce traffic shaping at certain times of the day. One company (I can't remember who, might be Sky) drop their connection speeds to around 500k/1mb between 5pm and 11pm no matter what you are doing, or so I heard.

Are downloading illegal music etc? if so aren't the major companies going to be restricting this type of traffic to try and stop it?

No, I was downloading the latest Flash player, the latest update to Firefox and Spybot.

That is traffic shaping, and a lot already do it apparantly, though not all admit to it.

No, not quite.
Most companies use traffic shaping software that targets torrent traffic, but it only kicks in if capacity at the exchange is peaking and it's nothing to do with 'downloading illegal music'. It'll target all torrent traffic, legal or otherwise, and only if other traffic, http or mail, is being impacted.

Well I have a three mobile dongle and regularly get speeds on 50 Kbps. Now that is what I call quality^.

They really are dreadful. However my Vodafone one regularly connects at 7.2 Mbps

They are terrible. Thankfully my 18 month contract is up. What broadband would you recommend now? Bare in mind that the only reason I got a dongle was that I was moving house every 6 months. Now I'm more settled.
