I don't know about Portuguese, but in German where a person has a 'von' in their name this is dropped when calling them by their surname. So 'Joachim von Ribbentrop' becomes just 'Ribbentrop'. De and von mean 'of' and are associated with aristocratic names, dropping it in english makes sense in this context too - I don't think anyone would refer to the Duke of Rutland as 'of Rutland'
