Leicester City and former Newcastle United footballer Nolberto Solano has been told there will be no further action over an allegation of rape.
The 35-year-old Peruvian international was arrested at a house in the Gosforth area of Newcastle in April.
It followed an allegation of rape made by a 22-year-old woman from the city.
In a statement issued through his solicitors, he said he was "relieved" but angry he had been the subject of a "malicious and untrue accusation".
He said: "Even though I knew I had done nothing wrong, the fear is that people may believe a false allegation.
"Thankfully Northumbria Police carried out a thorough and full investigation.
"I am grateful for their professionalism."
Solano, 35, spent eight years at Newcastle in two spells and has also played for Aston Villa and West Ham.
He completed his move to Leicester City in January.
