Lads as you may now gather ive followed SAFC for a few years.

With our next but one away match against you lot I thought I would post a couple of names that are familiar with both clubs.

Steve Whitworth we got him from you in 1978, an ex England international. I believe he actually skippered England on a couple of occasions. I must say he was one of the worst full backs ever to wera the R&W shirt of SAFC. Just wondered what you plder Lads thought of him.

Bob Lee signed him for £200 thiusand from you in 1976, a lot of money at the time, never really fulfilled his potential; with us and ended up at Bristol Rovers for a 1/4 of price. any memories?

And another one Frank Worthington, what acharacter though he had seen his best days when he joined us.

Just as a side issue, I saw a FA Cup 1/4 final at Loftus Road in 1974 when Leicester beat QPR, Joe waters??? an unknown I believe may have scored for you but i recollect frankie worthington parading on the pitch in ayellow suit!!

Any of you older lads recollect any of this?

regards

Steve SAFC

.... and beaumontfox has been so helpful as well.

Steve Whitworth a local lad played for us for years, and I can remember 3 city players playing for England in the same match, Whitworth, Weller and Worthington if I remember correctly. The match may have been against Argentina at Wembly and Frankie scored one of the two goals in a 2-0 win.

Joe Waters made his debut for City in a 2-0 win over QPR, and he scored both the goals as well, both in the 1st half. I was at the match that day and only learned of Joe Waters playing when The Birch was ruled not fit. QPR at the time were riding high in the then Div1 and we all thought our cup run was over. But Liverpool did that over 2 matches in the semis. Joe Waters spent most of his career at Grimsby

As for Bob Lee he was a good forward scored a lot of goals but I dont really know what happened to him after he left us

Lads and LASSES i recollect Keith weller also played for Chelsea. I can actually remember him on match of the day wearing a pair of tights.
Just like our own Jeff Whitley who actually wore some when we played derby 3 weeks ago!

Bob lee, Bob Lee, Bob lee, Bob lee, bob lee, bob lee, bob lee, bob lee,bob lee , bob lee, bob leee bob , lee, bob lee.

We bought Weller from Chelsea for a staggering £100k. Did not take long for him to become a legend.
He wore the tights in a home FA cup tie against Norwich and scored a fantastic solo goal into the bargain. It was January and it was cold!

Bob Lee drinks in my local. Nice chap.

Steve Whitworth was a terrific right back. We used to sing "Whitworth for England" (to the tune of Bring out the Branston) before he got his caps - so we knew he was better than most.

I went to the Wembley match (home international) against Northern Ireland when Whitworth Weller Worthington and Shilton all started. We won, I think, 1-0. It was while Joe Mercer was England caretaker manager. I was quite young at the time, though.

Joe Mercer, best England manager before Robson.
