Talking Balls forum FAQs

Most of the problems or questions people ask either in the support/techie forum, or by email, come up time and time again.
I've put some of the more common ones here, but you may be able to find answers to other questions by using the forum's search function or looking through the threads in the support and techie forums, and by looking at the main forum FAQ - by clicking here

Q: I've registered but I can't post.

A: You should have received an email from the forum, which contains a link that needs to be clicked on to confirm your registration. If you have clicked on this link, but still can't log in and post, please see the question below. If you haven't received the email your email system may think it's spam, so you may find it in a spam folder. If you can tell your email system to accept emails from specific addresses, adding [email protected] may help. you should also check that you have used the correct email address, a common cause of problems is people making a typo when registering.

If you haven't received the email and want it to be re-sent to you, log in, and you will see a message near the top of the page explaining that you have not activated your membership, including a link to request another activation email.

If the link in the email doesn't work, you may need to paste it directly into your browser's address bar.

Q: I've forgotten my password, can you send it to me?

A: No. The passwords are encrypted in the database, so it's impossible to send it to you. What you can do is request a new password. To do this, try to log in using the wrong password. When your attempted log in fails you will see a message with a link you can go to to request a new password. You'll need to enter the email address you used when you registered, and follow the instructions you receive by email.

Q: It keeps logging me out, what's wrong?

A: Have you got cookies enabled on your browser?
Cookies need to be enabled for the system to remember who you are. Sometimes non standard web browsers - such as the AOL browser, cause problems. Switching to a browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera may help. When you log in ticking the 'remember me' box should mean you won't need to log in again when you're using the same PC.

Q: What is vcash?

A: It's virtual cash, which you can use to place bets with our virtual bookmaker, see the vbookie link at the top of the page. You start with 500 vcash, and get an extra 25 every time a new betting event is added.

Q: Where has my vcash gone?

A: Vcash is reset to 500 at the end of every vbookie season. Each season lasts two months. Look in our Hall of Fame forum for details of previous winners.

Q: How can I put a picture under my name?

A: Go to your user control panel - linked at the top of each page, and click on the Edit Avatar link.

Q: Can I put a picture in my sig?

A: No.

Q: I posted a link to another site but it's broken, and looks odd.

A: Some words are automatically turned into links by the forum software. Words such as Amazon, Casino etc. If the link you post includes one of these words, there is a bug in the program which will break the link. These automatic links only happen the first time the word occurs in a post, so the easy way to fix it is to include the word in your post, before posting the link.

Q: How do I stop emails being sent to me when someone replies to a post?

A: The emails you receive include instructions how to unsubscribe to threads. You can also unsubscribe from within a thread by clicking on the thread tools link at the top of the thread. To change the default setting for thread notifications, go to your user cp and click on options.

Q: How do I change the words in a link I post?

A: See the link in the answer below

Q: What special codes can I use in my posts?

A: There is a list in the FAQ here: http://www.talkingballs.co.uk/misc.php?do=bbcode

Q: How can I see a lit of threads with posts I haven't read yet?
A: Click on the New Posts link at the top of the page.

Q: Can I change my user name?

A: Send a PM to me and I'll consider changing your name. It's not recommended that you use the names of players/managers, or your age etc in your user name, as players get sold, and you have birthdays. So I will be annoyed if I need to change your name for this reason.

Q: I can't find the answer I'm looking for on this page, where else can I look?

A: There is a lot of information in the standard forum FAQ, which is here: http://www.talkingballs.co.uk/faq.php
The forum search function is also a good way of finding out if someone has asked the same question or had a similar problem in the past.
Also have a look at all the menu items in the user control panel, there are a lot of setting which you can use to change the way the forum works.

If you still can't find an answer, please post it in the techie forum, unless there's an urgent problem with the forum that needs immediate attention, which should be posted in the support forum. Posts in the support forum send a text message to my mobile, so I will look into them as soon as possible, but this should only be used for problems that need immediate attention, not for questions about how to use the site.
