Surround sound and Sky+

OK, I have a sky plus box with a "digital audio out" socket, a square looking thing. My DVD player has a digital audio in socket, looks similar. Can I use http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&DOY=1m10&ModuleNo=35921&criteria= to connect the two and does Sky use true surround 5.1 surround or just emulate it?

You only get true 5.1 in some sports events and sky movies. Don't expect to hear Ian Beale talking behind you.
