I dont seem to see many threads re soul or R&B so here goes if anyone is interested. I reckon Marvin Gaye is the king of soul and has yet to be unseated in over 20 years since he died.

Stevie Wonder gets silver and the bronze goes to Maxwell.

I would rather listen to Aretha Franklin or something a bit Issac Hayes, a bit of the Philly sound and bit funk end of the soul spectrum. ;)

Listen to Otis Reading and you'll want to burn your Maxwell CDs!

It's worth keeping an eye open on the Mojo magazine cover mounted CDs, they occasionally do some amazing soul compilations.

I like Otis too but I reckon Maxwell's 'urban hang suite' is a classic album. Otis, another who died too young.

Marvin is the best in my opinion, range of old school motown, then changing the way RnB was viewed with Whats Going On? then moving onto Lets Get it On.

My favourite is still Here my Dear though.

"waiter, do you know i'm a country member?"

"yes sir, i remember"

Marvin is one of my faves too.
I've always liked Abraham Martin & John The vocal on it is so haunting.

Another fave of mine is Curtis Mayfield and his record "Soul Music" never a hit over here in UK is brilliant. Another one took from us before his time.

Stevies:icon_cool stuff in the 70's is best "Too High" "Living for the City(full album track) Pastime Paradise (used by at least 2 rappers in 90's) are my faves

what about Barry White, the ladies love his rhythm.

I prefer Stevie Wonder to Marvin Gaye, alot more variety and a bit more bounce.

but all are greats. :038:
