Levein rues losing star players
Leicester City boss Craig Levein says he is disappointed he could not have offered new deals to several players.
Scott Gemmill, Nathan Blake, Lilian Nalis, Keith Gillespie and Ian Walker are among those released.

Levein told the Leicester Mercury: "That was the hardest thing I had to do and it is not the players' fault that they are earning high wages.

"All the players I had to let go, in different circumstances, would have

stayed, purely on football."
Suely CL realises that these players should not have stayed on a football basis. Apart from Walker none of them should have been offered a contract as they dont fit in with what we are trying to do. the last part confuses me as to what CL really is trying to build.

might just be being picky :-D

allways manage to balls that up :-(

simply judging by effort keeping nalis would be sensible, for ability gillespie would have to stay.....i am trying to think of what gemmill and blake offer in terms of 'football'

I think he was just being polite

Exactly, there is no point rubbishing somebody just for the sake of it. :D :D  ;-)

CLis a professional - It will have been hard for him to let these players go, he was merely giving some of the lesser players a bit of praise to give them a sporting chance of getting fixed up elsewhere.

or maybe, he is preparing his ground ready for the angst from ST subscr ibers when we don't feature too prominently in next season's promotion stakes.

CL had to get rid of them irrespective of our assessment of their abilities. So he will be able to say and probably rightly that people can't expect to much in the short term.

The paradox is that whilst the club was right to get rid of them - there is no certainty that he will be able to replace them with substantially better players - in football -as in life in general, you usually get what you pay for - and we ain't going pay very much.

Come on, if CL REALLY wanted to keep them he would have made them an offer however small to see if they would stay and who knows he might have, but as already said he is not going to put them down as they need to find new clubs.
The only one IMO I would have liked to have stayed is Walker. But hey lets move on and build a new squad hungry for success.

I think Blake rubbished himself to be honest Steve.

With respect, I think that's missing the point.

CL is I think concerned with proparing his ground for next season and that involves establishing a sense of reality about expectations.

I actually don't think any of them were worth keeping including Walker because whilst he's obviously been a more than decent keeper, he's now past his best and injury dogged.

Apparently Dabs has set his heart on a move to Italy.

Why do it to yourself, setting yourself up for disappointment like that...
