It's good business for damn sure. You've got to invest in your academy and other young players constantly to maintain it. Does this lead to trophies though? Surely the ultimate ambition is to be able to go toe to toe with the 'big boys' and compete for honours? That's what the fans want and how you keep your players happy.

This is just the reality of where we are as a club, we have a mid table budget and are a long way from competing with the big teams financially. Player sales are an important source of income that is needed if we are to make further investments and try to improve. As long as we can limit it to selling 1 key asset a year we are doing well.

Of course we don't want this to be the case forever but it will take several years of sustained success to change things.

And based on the latter part of last season, it is going to take several signings to make us successful.

Good to see we are back to being a low profile mid table team it seems. Football weekly podcast had one line on us in the “top half” preview, bundled Everton in with the “big clubs” and covered them in great detail before the team who were a game away from CL qualification. I’m not complaining as I think that might be a better place for us to be starting from than over-hyped.

Jermaine ****ing Jenas on Harvey Barnes...

“He could play for City, he could play for Chelsea...”
