can anyone tell me how many teams top in the 3rd tier of football at xmas have failed to get automatic promotion?,the only one i can think of was forest a couple of seasons ago.

i've never looked at the third division because it's shite.
and when we are out of it i won't ever look at it again either!

The only way we'll be able to go back into the championship with our heads held high is if:
we get over 100 points,
Mandaric reignites his financial enthusiasm for getting us into the prem.
Forest get relegated,
Leeds don't get promoted
&
Matty Fryatt gets 40 goals.

Anything less and we'll just be back to square one being one of the worst teams in the championship.

All of that stuff could actually happen.

it needs to in order to give us the momentum to make sure we are a man city or wigan who escaped this league and then kicked on, rather than a forest or leeds who now yo yo betwen champ and league one rather than prem and championship.

I think we need to know how many points are needed to get promotion - either 1st or 2nd place. I'm guessing it's around 90-92 points.

we all knew we would piss this division.i want quality signings in the window not loan stuff.we have the money or at least he has.

What kind of yo-yos did you play with when you were a kid?

Reminds me of the lyrics in Elton Johns "All the girls love Alice" about a 16 year old yo-yo. In that case a yo-yo was a lesbian.

Not sure if that was the same sort of yo-yo that he played with as a kid though!

What an odd thing to say. There is no definitive number of points that is needed for promotion. All that is needed is that we get more points than 22 other clubs in the division.

At this moment, the most points that both MKDons and Millwall can get is 116. We therefore need to get 117 points (or 116 points with a superior goal difference to either one of them) to ensure promotion.

The briefest of reviews of previous years tables however will show you that it will be quite an exceptional year if a club needs as many as 90-92 points to ensure automatic promotion.

What if all the teams go into administration? We'd need less, but if we went into administration we'd need more. It's all about the math. Maths don't lie. So, what's the answer?

The answer is 91-92. Everyone knows that. If I had a tardis I'd pop into the future find out if it was 91 or 92 and then post the answer here. Unfortunately, I lent my tardis to a mate. He's a gay. He uses it for cottaging.

A tardis is renowned for being far bigger inside than it appears on the outside.

Is there any relevance there at all?

Sounds like part of my body

I find it strange that you seemingly only concentrate on the last three sentences. :icon_conf

We're the three word gang. three sentences was pretty impressive.

It's not really that odd, is it?

If it is then it's odd to say that usually a club need 40 points to stay in the Premier League each season. That's always accepted as the main target - give or take a couple of points either way.

I doubled the points tally we had after 20 games - giving us 88 points and we weren't quite half way so added a little bit more giving us 90-92 points. Not that scientific but gives a good guage as to the task inhand.

In the last couple of seasons, the first place team has had 92 and 91 points respectively with the second place team back in the 80s so it's not that far off.

A simple rule of thumb that works most seasons in this league and the next one up:

Average one point per game and you will probably be relegated.

Average two points per game and you will probably get automatic promotion.

What about 1.73?
