Just tried to install 2007 but it said it's not compatible with my version of Vista (home premium).

Is it worth trying anyway or will it bugger things up?

Seems strange, I would be tempted to install it anyway

According to MS:

Host operating system: Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

I think I'll install it on a different PC to play with it, don't want to bugger up my new vista laptop.

I only really need it to test my sites in IE6, seems it might be a bit overkill if I ever get the bleeding thing to work

There are other ways of getting different versions of IE to run on the same PC.
There's a few different hacks around to do it, ask that nice mr Google.
