To be honest I'm just doing your trick and being argumentative. I thought I remembered his form dipping at that time because I remember thinking the pressure was maybe getting to him. I think the captain's role is over played anyway, everyone in the team should be talking and encouraging.

I agree up to a point. Wellens would be an appalling choice if the captaincy actually meant anything.

I like Wellens and I sit down near the front so can sometimes hear him giving others a bollocking. - and sometimes it is his fault...
I would say though, the whole captaincy might go to his head a bit and he might end up taking all free kicks, corners, etc...because he's a bit cocky like that....Thought he was terrible against Real Madrid...he needs to find form and quickly.

I think with the glut of midfielders now on the books, that Wellens is the one of the midfielders who may will give way so I would have thought giving the captaincy is unlikely.

I think Wellens would make a great captain. He's the sort of player who would fit the role well - a battler, tough, experienced and senior. Good choice I say.

It's difficult to pick out any player from the squad who you would expect to play most of the games. Certainly not from midfield anyway. A defender would be a better bet - I wonder why Bamba has not been given a shot at it in pre-season.

To go back to another thread, I scratch my head when people say this about Wellens. I can't say I've ever seen any evidence of him being "tough" or "a battler." If anything, I see him being the opposite and gets pushed off the ball too easily.
