Leicester City Football Club has today (Tuesday) reached a mutual agreement with Richie Wellens for the cancellation of his remaining contract.
The 33-year-old midfielder will become a free agent with immediate effect, after ending his four-year association with the Foxes.

Wellens joined City from Doncaster Rovers in July 2009 and went on to make 149 first team appearances in all competitions, scoring six times and featuring most recently in a 2-1 defeat at Derby County in March.

During the 2012/13 season, Wellens also spent a month on loan with fellow Championship side Ipswich Town, where he made seven appearances between October and November 2012.

Leicester City would like to wish Richie well in his future career.

quality player with a combative attitude and a great football brain, ideal for cm in the championship. our best player in 2009-10, thanks richie

Cue over-the-top abuse of someone who was a decent player for us and foolishly accepted a huge pay rise.

On the down side, he was often guilty of trying passes he wasn't capable of, he couldn't tackle at all and he would almost invariably bring a developing attack to a complete standstill. Nonetheless, he was a perfectly decent performer when he remembered his limitations and stuck to what he could do. Good luck to the bloke.

Was decent

Isn't good enough now, and certainly wouldn't be used this season

Excellent move for both us and the player

Sums it up perfectly.

Richie always gave 100% and I never heard any negative stories about him. If he plays against us I hope he will be warmly applauded.

Serious question for a change - does Wellens', or any other player that has left, payoff have to go down all in this years accounts or is it allowed to be pro rata'd for the remaining years on their contracts. EG if Wellens had 2 years to go, does his pay off have to be all into this years accounts or can it be spread across this year's and next year?

Don't know if that contract length was correct but just an example?

Often the pay off won't be a lump sum but will be paid over the length of the original contract. What sometimes happens is a player finds a new club, on lower wages, and the old club makes up the difference so the player doesn't lose out.

I haven't seen anybody down the walkers who can win free kicks the way he does. He made it an art.

Good luck to the bloke, was a good player for us in the early years.
