New Deal For Wesolowski
Posted on: Tue 03 Jul 2007

Leicester City are today delighted to confirm that midfielder James Wesolowski has signed an extension to his contract that will keep him at the Walkers Stadium until 2011.

Australian Wesolowski (19) joined the Foxes from Northern Spirit in 2002 - and has progressed through the club's academy system to first team level.

He caught the eye during the 2005-06 pre-season campaign and following his performance in a 3-0 win at Kettering Town, was selected as a member of the touring party to Norway.

After suffering the set-back of a broken leg, the tough-tackling midfielder made his comeback against Plymouth in January 2006 - and went on the make a number of impressive appearances before bad luck struck again as he sustained another broken leg away at Brighton less than a month later.

Wesolowski came back fighting fit in the 2006-07 campaign, and has now made a total of 29 appearances for the Foxes.

City boss Martin Allen said: "I am chuffed to bits that James has signed a contract extension.

"He has energy and he has enthusiasm. I am really looking forward to working with him and helping him to get in to the full Australian squad."

Wesolowski has previously been called up to train with the full Australian international squad, but has yet to make a senior appearance for his country.

The youngster joined up with his City team-mates this morning for the first day of pre-season training at the Belvoir Drive training ground.

Great news, we can get a fee for him now.

I think when he is good, he is very good, so hopefully MA can get him playing very well more than once or twice a season

Generally looked good with the run at the end of the season.

I hope he breaks into the starting line-up alongside an attacking midfielder.

Please don't mention breaks in regards to Weso! ;)

Hope Weso can now move on and show he's deserved the 4 year extension. Think he'll be important for us this year.

You lot are unbelievable, a young lad like wesso signs a new contract and people still have to moan about it.

FFS he is a very young lad who has undoubted pottential and could be one of our better players. one member of the senior side who actually gives a **** and outs the effort in and people still barrack the lad. This place is worse than the WI at the time of the month.

I’ve rated the kid ever since I saw him against Celtic in pre-season (when he first broke his leg). For a young lad, he’s very willing to assume responsibility, he has never let us down for work rate, he hasn’t shirked a tackle despite the injuries he has had and, considering he’s a defensive midfielder, he’s not shy about getting forward (set up a VERY important goal for Stearman at QPR a couple of season’s ago – maybe Kelly’s first game – and also scored a cracker against Fulham this year). He is exactly what we need at this club and he will show himself to be vital this year…

Well said Lako. If his form dipped it was hopefully just a reflection of the management and coaching at the time and it will pick up again under the new regime and rekindle the early promise he showed.

Agreed.

It's significant that promising young players e.g. Weso, Fryatt & Stearman made no progress (in fact they regressed) under Kelly.

Hopefully, all three will do much better under new management.

Many of us - including me - can be very critical of those who don't make any effort - but talented young players have to be encouraged if there is to be any future for the club.

Let us hope that the MA style of coaching includes some guidelines on off-field activities, drinking, casinos etc, that some youngsters feel are an essential part of their lifestyle, but can be very detrimental to being able to play to the best of their ability. I do not want a player who is prepared to accept average ability because his physical fitness is compromised by his expensive lifestyle choices.

Quite pleased about this.
Did think for a while he had gone off the rails after his injuries but I thought he was excellent in the closing weeks of the season.
