Charlton v Leicester - Preview

By Trevor
Date: 17/2/2005

Charlton meet Leicester City at The Valley on Saturday as they bid to make the quarter finals of the competition. The Addicks have never met the Foxes in the FA Cup at any stage of the tournament.

The Valley will be close to capacity on Saturday, you would expect that wouldn't you. Charlton have only ever played two FA Cup fifth round ties in SE7 over the course of nearly 50 years.

After failing to reach anywhere near capacity against league two opponents Rochdale and Yeovil in the previous rounds everyone will be coming out of the woodwork for this one.

The Millenium Stadium is within sight for the first time in a long time and even the bookies have as down as 14/1 fifth favourites for the Cup.

League One outfit Leicester though will certainly provide a stiff test and they will also be looking to progress beyond the fifth round and they will be roared on by 4,000 Foxes fans inside The Valley.

Alan Curbishley has tinkered with the side in the previous rounds and Bryan Hughes and Francis Jeffers will both be hoping to get the nod for this one.

Hughes netted twice against Rochdale and was on the scoresheet again in the next round against Yeovil.

Leicester Manager Gary Levin is boosted by the news that a trio of players are ready to return to action. Gareth Williams, Alan Maybury and Matt Heath are all back in training and ready for selection.

The last meeting between the two sides came back in May 2004 when the match produced a 2-2 draw. Jon Fortune and Paolo Di Canio netted the goals.

Likely team - Kiely, Young, Hreidarsson, Fortune, El Karkouri, Hughes, Holland, Murphy, Thomas, Jeffers, Bartlett.

Looks like a strong Charlton side. But we can match nearly every one of those players so it should be a close game.

I think we will draw 1-1. Bryan Hughes to score 1st for them, and David Connolly will get the equaliser!

Nice one Trevor you illiterate beaver.

Two completely disparate facts fused together in a shambles of a sentence. Poor.

I think the general consensus here is that the match will end in a draw which I think is about right. I draw would possibly be a better result than a win - "Joe_Fox you are mad!" I hear you say but stick with me - if we draw we will bring them back to the Walkers Stadium where another bumper crowd will be seen giving Craig Levein more money to play with. Also, the probability of the replay being televised on Sky (or BBC) would be around 90% so the chances of even more money for CL. "But it's better to win the game than to risk winnign a replay" I hear you say, well yes, but bearing in mind that I have foreseen a nasty bout of influenza in the Charlton ranks around the time of the replay, they will only have 11 players to choose from, three of them being just 15. We'll easily win that and you know what they say - don't mish with another mans mosh - Man United away in the quarters - another draw, another replay and another bout of influenza but this time for the 'Mancs' and it's semi final time. Chelski away, draw, replay, bout of influenza, win 8-0, final against Arsenal - win 9-8 after being 8 nil down with 10 minutes to go - no influenza, just a huge amount of champagne and pork pies. Get In!!!

i think ill take the win thanks. not everythings about money.

by 5pm tomorrow we can concentrate on the league...

you should avoid cliches like the plague webbo

He's just clutching at straws, MK.
Hope springs eternal in him, but there's no fool like and old fool, if you ask me

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a victory at the eleventh hour, but this is a real David and Goliath match.

As long as we give 110 per cent, and all our boys play for the name on the front of the jersey and not on the back, then the result might be in the bag

At the end of the day it's only a game.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND LADS!!!!

BLUE FECKIN ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M OFF TO GET WRECKED!
