how do i get it to default to the details view

VIEW - Details

Then, TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS and choose VIEW then APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS.

i've got it to work on previous PCs... must be something stupid about this one

might log a call with helpdesk (they love me!)

Tools menu > Folder options > View tab > scroll down & check "Remember each folder's view settings"
Or uncheck it & use 'Apply to all folders' button
