Sandwich always has been a quiet little town... apparently.

I note the thread title, but surely even perusing TB at work is not 'safe' for many!

Nothing? Not a sausage?
How do they know? Is there (apart from the plaque) hard evidence that nothing happened?

What you don't understand about the Ancient Cinque Port town of Sandwich (and other seafaring towns) is that there are still people alive today who were born before 1782. The 5th September of that year is still very clearly in their minds as a boring day. The American War of Independence was under way and the people of the town were hunched over their wind-up radios (electricity had not yet been invented) awaiting news of HMS Hector which had come into conflict with the French ships Aigle and Gloire. They didn't have time or energy for anything else and thus nothing happened.

This seems to have happened right across the south coast and similar plaques can be found in several coastal towns:

... and others.

The real truth is though that the plaque has a typo. The date should read September 5th 1752 when I can assure you that absolutely nothing happened anywhere in Great Britain. As part of the reformation of the calendar in accordance with the 1750 Calendar (New Style) Act, Wednesday 2 September 1752 was followed by Thursday 14 September and so it can in all honesty be said that nothing happened on 5th September because there was no such day.

I'll let you decide which of these explanations is the correct one. Or perhaps something else is true?

Busy day today, Boc?

this day in history 11 Aug 2012

I have this authentic looking plate outside on a large stone block. It commemorates more to me than nothing happened in my garden on that date but on almost every other date in history too.

There are many awful things that are commemorated, but that my garden was at peace on that date and today is great.

Solid outdoor robust plate looks like it is old.

Mark S seems happy with his

Nothing happening is not random, it's the natural state when something isn't going on.

I rule that this thread be dismissed.

random should be non-deterministic if we close the thread it would be deterministic
